Well, October 1 is here – and if I’m honest, this stretch of the year might be my favourite of all four. I know, I know, there’s always someone ready to argue for summer. Go ahead. I’ll still be over here in my sweater, perfectly content. If autumn’s your season too, you already know exactly what I mean.
My garden is asking for less fidgeting right now, and with a grateful heart, I will begin to gently cut back the perennials and protect them until they are ready to bloom again.
The patio still has all the leftover signs of summer – of quiet reads on the deck, the barbecue with well-used tools hanging on their hooks, and melted candles that helped keep most of the bugs away from the long dinners with family and friends. But, this week, I’m putting most things away until the days grow longer once again.
I will bring the barbecue closer to the patio door so I can still enjoy grilling during the winter months. Perhaps not exclusively typical to Canadians, but northern climates make for hardy snow-tested citizens!
I’m leaving a chair or two, and perhaps a wee table, for those cool mornings with a hot cup between my hands and the crisp air on my face.
The sun still pours into my office most afternoons, but there’s a breeze through the window now that actually feels good – a relief, honestly, after a summer of heat and humidity I never fully make peace with year after year.
And there’s a practical joy in it too: this is when I can finally record again in comfort . A fan or an air conditioner humming underneath every take in a make-shift studio-office-creator’s space, does not make for a calming meditation recording. Cooler air, cleaner sound, and somehow the ideas come easier alongside it.
Maybe it’s no accident that this is also the season of orange and amber – colours I’ve always felt sitting close to the sacral chakra, the seat of creativity itself. The trees put on their boldest colour right as I feel my own creative pull return. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
Mostly, though, I’m just grateful. For a good summer with people I love, and now for the slower, cosier kind of togetherness that’s coming, same feeling, just moving it indoors – maybe next to a fireplace with crackling sounds in the background.
An invitation to create
Bring a little autumn colour into your creative space. Add something orange, amber or golden to your desk, studio or journal space, and spend a few minutes creating without deciding what the result should be. A doodle, a sketch, or the start of a mandala – flow with whatever inspires you and promotes release and calm
Let the colour be the starting point. See what comes to mind, what wants to be made, or simply enjoy having something warm and vibrant nearby.
There doesn’t have to be a finished product. Sometimes a little colour is enough to get creativity moving again.
Welcome to October.
